People who are optimistic live longer No possible way this association could be caused by biases in the datahttps://twitter.com/emollick/status/1398793478776164354 …

Optimism turns out to be a huge predictor of extraordinary longevity. Two studies, one 30 years long and the other 10 years, found that high optimism was linked to 11%-15% greater lifespans, even taking into account socioeconomic factors, health & more. https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/116/37/18357.full.pdf … pic.twitter.com/wdKNVFBuKM

I think the default assumption in cases like this should be that of course optimism is associated with good health it'd be WEIRD if it wasn't unless we expect existing health issues to make people happier

To put it another way - is it likely that being optimistic is an independent state that influences health or is it a marker for other things in life that benefit health?

Easy to be optimistic if you have good health, which may be a result of more money and less stress, which could be due to having a good job and positive personal relationships...

They say they controlled for health issues, though. If there are other things that make people happy and optimistic and also make them live longer it seems worth figuring out what they are.

We cancer survivers call this toxic positivity because this argument is used to poison the lives of people who are struggling.

So pleased to see this flagged, i know people who have a problem for every solution with their LT conditions/pain etc they are sad & relatively frail & i mean genuinely, i think of mine as something that i live along side of, its complicated but can be achieved, i don't think

Of events being repeated, i just live each day as it comes. Im happy & no longer feel the need to either let things define me or stop my enjoyment of my life or people in it, to do otherwise is exhausting.
