My favourite part of the lab leak vs natural argument for COVID-19 is that 99% of people's opinions seems to basically come down to how much they trust the Chinese government

For example, while the idea that China released SARS-CoV-2 in a deliberate or accidental ploy, it is wonderful that the countervailing conspiracy in some places is that it is all a CIA operation that ultimately backfired

And I can't figure out why people think they'd lie about one but not the other.

We know they responded rapidly to two SARS lab leaks previously. Like within hours. But we also know they were in denial weeks into SARS-COV-2 by any timeline. I reject the "engineered bioweapon" out of hand, but it is feasible they'd be inconsistent.

I don't trust governments, and I especially don't trust mid-level government officials with egos and career aspirations, but my one big question is not if the virus leaked from the lab, but if the lab discovered the virus and tried to alert the government *before* it emerged.

It seems so weird to me that even though that would indeed be a very real scandal, and a major one, as well as being far more probable than that it was genetically engineered or spilled over from the lab, this question is not the predominant one.

I guess I'm in the 1% then. While I think natural is the most likely explanation, I have neither trust nor love for the Chinese government.

I trust an aging cohort of bureaucrats not to intentionally release a highly contagious virus that kills old people. I'm not sure where that puts me on this spectrum.

I’m yet to see a good reason why all theories can’t be considered without calling a lab leak theory a conspiracy. It’s happened before. And no, Chinese govt can’t be trusted. We already know they covered things up. A dead doctor told us.

I still remembered when J.Ioannidis published that controversial preprint, there’s a pretty clear consensus against him and criticism of his COI. But when it comes to LL theory, these prestigious media all seem to overlook the clear COI of some most vocal scientists on this issue
