This is a bizarre take. The evidence has stayed precisely the same - natural origin very likely, lab leak thus far entirely unproven and a very low chance The rest is mostly misconceptions caused by reading only sensationalist headlineshttps://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1397160688284536842 …

Yeah, this is probably right. I wrote the other day how my priors had shifted from "natural origin slightly more likely" to "lab leak slightly more likely". But to me anyway, the evidence seems murky and inscrutable either way and I'm not sure it has *changed* that much. https://twitter.com/bendreyfuss/status/1396966383011913730 …

I’d agree default position is natural origin with spill over but considering this is an once in a century pandemic, all possibilities are very low probability events. Of course one is relatively more probable than others but all possibilities are very low chance events.

Indeed, and it is true to say that the Chinese government seems to be obstructionist and disinterested in disproving a lab leak, but that doesn't change the scientific perspective very much

After listening to WHO investigators discuss it that really isn't the impression I got (re obstructionism):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7kRxmEgzbQ …

CCP was more obstructionist during SARS, possible there’s been a slight improvement but access to pre Nov 19 blood bank samples for serology, stored respiratory samples must be provided. WIV also released 7 novel CoV sequences a week back. Wonder if this was shared with WHO team?

If they were going to do a cover up, they could have planted evidence of sars cov 2 in an intermediate host at the wet market. The fact that nobody has found it yet is a pretty good sign they aren’t actively cooking evidence

Because penalties include execution, we are often mislead into thinking authoritarian systems are accountable at least to their top. But hiding the start of even the most natural outbreak would have been the 1st instinct of local officials.

I now see that a natural origin unrelated to a lab is the most likely explanation. I read Counterpunch article & believed lab leak thesis. Andersen's latest Tweets changed my mind. Better communication from scientists can prevent much confusion. MORE

If Dazsak had explained in lay terms at the outset why a lab is an unlikely source I wouldn't have given much credence to the lab theory. His information about the virus catalog produced by WIV before the pandemic is very persuasive.
