The most interesting data point is South Dakota. As the only state to never order closures of restaurants, bars & retail, SD actually saw a 0.5% DECREASE in unemployment since the pandemic started. It also never ordered a mask mandate. Its deaths per capita is the 10th highest.

Sure, but federal coordination isn't the only external factor that might affect things (setting aside the questionable analogy to gun control; there's no reason to think state regulation can't work there if you don't have a conservative judiciary striking down state laws).

It seems very plausible, however, that whatever the merits or demerits of internal border controls, you need coordination at the same scope as the region that you isolate.

I do agree with you that the results are inconclusive! Hence no correlation, as explained in the thread. Which begs the question why those who oppose restrictions are labeled as “anti-science” but those who support them aren’t…

I wouldn't say that all those who oppose restrictions are "anti-science", but there is a very large crossover between people who dislike NPIs and people who aren't very interested in evidence
