I'm fairly happy to short the "actually, lockdowns were good for people's mental health!" position as better evidence comes out over the next several years.https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1396074337090691079 …

There is now some reasonably strong evidence that non-pharmaceutical interventions against COVID-19 ("lockdowns") were associated with decreased short-term suicides in several locations in the world https://twitter.com/jeremyfaust/status/1395829954256977927 …

Suicide =/= mental health. I'd recommend reading some of @tylerblack32 threads if you're interested in the topic rather than tedious straw men 👍

If you think you're being straw-manned, you should be more precise about what you're saying. In various tweets in your thread, you're both suggesting that lockdowns decrease suicides and that there's no relationship between them. The former is a much more ambitious claim.

I was precise - nowhere did I mention overall mental health, and the statements I made were factually accurate with regards to suicide rates and COVID-19

The reason I responded as I did is because the first tweet in your thread indeed made the hyperboilc claim that lockdowns decrease suicides. So yeah there was a little bit of hyperbole (equating suicides to overall mental health) in response. Welcome to the Internet.

I did not make that claim, this is just a continuation of your initial straw man. The claim is very specific - in several places in the world, NPIs were associated with a decrease in suicides

Judging from across the pond @NateSilver538 lost a lot more credibility due to his COVID-Tweets than he ever could with any election forecasts for more than a year now... Precisely because of this mixture of inaccuracy, jumping to conclusions, and hybris.

Nate, Gid is definitely not inferring causality. He’s an epidemiologist. They are very careful not to do that unintentionally. I think you should re-read what he’s written.

I'm in the high-risk zone for having adjacent, sophomoric knowledge myself (know statistics, have written about epidemiology) which is why I'm mostly trying to shut up about coronavirus. But I will say be wary of overconfidence and trust folks who express uncertainty/doubt.
