There is now some reasonably strong evidence that non-pharmaceutical interventions against COVID-19 ("lockdowns") were associated with decreased short-term suicides in several locations in the worldhttps://twitter.com/jeremyfaust/status/1395829954256977927 …

It is almost as if people would be happier had suicides risen as some were worried they could, so that their political arguments would be stronger But that can't be the case, surely?

The other quite funny thing is that everyone takes this as an explicit argument about mental health, which it is not - suicide and mental health are linked, but not the same issue by any means

I thought suicide rates had risen. If they didnt, how could anyone think its bad news? I guess theyd rather be right than have less people offing themselves? Weird place to be.

I was rather surprised too, but they're around the samepic.twitter.com/2HqqDYsa7c

They get angry for the same reason they get angry if you suggest that the old “normal” was actually unbelievably shitty for most of the World that is not white and entitled

people don’t just start killing themselves out of the blue. you can’t just look at a year of data and say “oh boy, lockdowns are neutral on mental health!”. could be long term effects
-
He is not saying they were 'neutral on mental health!' He is simply pointing out that the predicted avalanche of suicides did NOT occur.

I've been debunking hyperbolic nonsense for years. I always frame it as "hey, I have some really good news for you. That thing you're really upset about isn't actually a thing". Apparently, I'm still an asshole

They are very invested in that narrative being true. It’s gross actually.

Kids are being affected in ways different than adults. Resources are needed, and without advocacy, those resources will never come. https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/patient-flow/overrun-with-kids-attempting-suicide-children-s-colorado-declares-state-of-emergency.html?utm_medium=email&utm_content=newsletter …
