2/n The article reports a survey that was run by @smh and @theage talking to adults about whether they were "likely" to be vaccinated "in the months ahead"pic.twitter.com/C5SKDzGWkm

3/n According to the article, with nearly a third responding that they were unlikely to be vaccinated, there is a serious reason for concern representing an "alarming level of vaccine hesitancy" But do the results show this?pic.twitter.com/rpQWDZlmVg

4/n In the article, we've first got this bar chart, and indeed the two bottom numbers sum to 29% - nearly a third Except, add up all the percentages here, and they equal 64%. What's going on?pic.twitter.com/aQeMsQh2X6

5/n Well, the chart says that this excludes people already immunized Further down, we can see a pie chart (shudder) showing that ~36% of people report either being vaccinated or having a booking for one alreadypic.twitter.com/EvUjgfYIKW

6/n So an alternative headline for this piece could've been "More than two-thirds of Australian adults already vaccinated or planning on getting one soon" In my opinion, that would be an entirely reasonable reading of the data presented

7/n I also strongly disagree that the people saying that they are unlikely to get vaccinated "in the coming months" is necessarily a sign of vaccine hesitancy at all

8/n If you look at the REASONS that people give for not thinking they'll get immunized soon, some are legitimate concerns but some are also literally factual reporting based on the current phased rollout in Australiapic.twitter.com/03R3w6B1tH

I'm struggling to see many non slappable reasons there

I think, given the messaging in Australia, that some worries about Astrazeneca are predictable and totally understandable sadly

Predictable....yes The fact they are considered understandable and not automatic fish slapping offences is a scathing indictment of numeracy in Australia (its no better here)pic.twitter.com/pdHA2p4DD0

Nahhh disagree. We're all shit at risks, the real problem is messaging and communication imo. You can plan for people to misunderstand!

We are shit at risks until we are taught probability. This might be an autism thing but.....its very frustrating how people use feelings as an excuse. Feelings come later. Thinking comes first. Sigh.

Even if it's low risk, no one want to be the one who is the unlucky one. I read all the pfizer/moderna trials because I could see only vaccin would help, and I was able to convince my mom it was safe. Then there was AZ, with a lot of talking about the few bloodclots cases.

It's played into the Govt. planning. Most reasons identified all lead back to the messaging, at one point or other, of Govt. Good job we have an up-take problem at the moment because we have a supply issue when considering the global advice is to vaccinate as quickly as possible.

Also a bit confused as to how to measure the responses; did people have the option to tick multiple reasons??
