      Health Nerd Retweeted Bloomberg Opinion

Gotta say, as someone who did an entire Masters degree online because I was working full time, I find the handwaving about how terrible online classes are to be weird and tedioushttps://twitter.com/bopinion/status/1393572930257362946 …

I get that people have missed the campus experience, and I also understand that this is a very different thing for people in the United States compared to where I went to university

That being said, the idea that the ~teaching~ that universities provided was valueless because it was online is weird to me as someone who benefitted greatly from an entirely online course

I remember when the transition began initially people were furious because the price hadn't been changed so it suggested the totality of tuition costs were based in the education value of the lectures

I can't speak for everyone but my experience was that in one class I never even got a final grade. They just gave me an A without grading my last 8 assignments so I'm still not sure if my final research paper was even any good

Bloomberg exists to make universities into corporate training so their opinion on universities is pretty suss. I assume for rich people uni is all about the networking at so-called elite academies their parents made endowments to so they can get in and scrape by.

The Masters Degree is probably the best place for online education

Not to mention that when I asked and requested for online to reduce the time travel cost burden on me I was told not possible by the same University and course that then could do it instantly when COvID hit. Universities are cesspools of inequality and discrimination

To be fair, Australia has a lot more experience with distance education in the tertiary sector. My partner did a remote masters in the days before internet and there was a lot of mail packages and tape recordings involved. As it was, we still did lectures and tutorials by 1/2

2/2 zoom preserving the "face to face" aspects along with added in zoom drop in sessions. Practical wet labs were harder but a combination of videos and existing data files allowed us to keep the data analysis components of the pracs authentic

The benefit you had was attending a program that was designed to be fully online. There’s skill in doing so that people underestimate. Universities that thought they could take an in person class & easily convert it to online learned how wrong they were over the past year.

In my experience, 20 plus years ago, there was not much interaction in lectures. I can see many advantages of them being online.

Actually on-line courses allow me to go back over what professor said, take better notes, & organise the information into a form I can more easily remember. Being herded into a University auditorium allows only a little information from going from professor's brain to student's.
