There’s nothing new about this. I’d refer you to Thomas Kuhn’s “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” (1962). Once a new scientific paradigm gains traction, it becomes entrenched in the academic community. Those who were once flaming revolutionaries become the Old Guard.
