This challenge, accepted by many editors, actually predates the pandemic but of course that has exacerbated everything

Sure, I mean it's never easy to get people to work for free. It's a weird and painful system that relies largely on volunteer hours

But we are also getting more and more invites. I don’t have time to check if the journal I am getting a question from is reputable or not.

Exactly. Managing my personal life takes more hours. Managing my students and their well being takes more hours. My clinical work load is higher than ever. The number of meetings for everything has at least doubled. My committee work takes more hours...

Being a non-researcher, I am sure there must be good reason, but why cannot funds for external review be included in the research grants? Would a $1000 per review suffice, or $2000? The reviewers could be chosen by the journals and the researchers might pay thru the journals.

Agree. And the requests are relentless. I get on average four every day.

I understand that the smaller journals may not be able to afford it, but paying people to review would a) probably improve the quality of reviews and b) create enthusiasm to continue to review. It is free work to review (as is writing the manuscript for some of us). Should it be?

Yep! Not only it is free work but since I started writing on COVID the number of review requests I got doubled... My days are however the same... still 24h. Can't manage! Although some journals/authors seem to get reviews in <24h... https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.08.13.249847v2.full …pic.twitter.com/fuZf2FBfM3
