There are several reasons this herd immunity announcement was a bit strange (more: https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-non-peer-reviewed-modelling-presented-on-a-dashboard-suggesting-that-a-herd-immunity-threshold-of-73-4-will-be-reached-this-week-on-9-april-2021/ …), but below suggests it's just claiming we'll soon have R<1 with current level of restrictions and immunity, which is... not how most readers will interpret the headline.https://twitter.com/BristOliver/status/1380217596679749638 …

It's frustrating because surely everyone realises by now that if you tell the media 'we'll reach herd immunity on Monday', people will assume you mean actual herd immunity, i.e. R below 1 without any other restrictions.

I think much of the absurdity of the whole herd immunity debate has been around scientists using very specific definitions while the commonly understood meaning is "pandemic over"

Or it's like a light switch some herd immunity gatekeeper is overlooking while counting immunizations

Cases accelerate rapidly until Steve from Hoboken gets infected, which tips us over into herd immunity and there's no new cases!

I'm very careful NOT to say "herd immunity." Instead my focus is on the question "when will US COVID deaths get below 300/day and stay <300/day for a while?" because that's about what the US gets at the peak of a normal flu season.

I would LIKE the US to get flu deaths below what's considered "normal," but as a practical matter right now it's clear that the US can function normally with a few hundred daily flu deaths so should be able to function normally with that number of COVID deaths,
