This is one of the reasons that I usually stay away from offering explicit policy opinions. As a scientist, I can give you a pretty good estimate of the impact of COVID-19, but it's up to us as a society to decide what to do about thathttps://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1388991268580040710 …

For example, were lockdowns a good idea? Basically impossible to answer, depends on your perspective Did lockdowns cause or prevent death? That's something that we can look at scientifically (still complex)

(As for many things, the answer to the question of whether lockdowns caused or prevented deaths appears to be, somewhat unsatisfyingly, "it depends")

What is a bit puzzling is that freedom obviously is not a value that trumps all the others all the time, as otherwise the same people (unless they are full-fledged anarchic) should complain about all limitations to freedom, including laws and the very existence of prisons...

I honestly wish that those that talked of freedom read about it as much as they tweeted about it. At its most basic - positive and negative freedom. You don't have "freedom" if it impinges on others.

What freedom? I respect your scientific work greatly, but I'd shy away from the use of the word 'freedom' if it's not necessarily in your wheelhouse For example: My freedom is curtailed by you not wearing a mask. Or by not limiting your movement.

I agree with your points in this thread. My American perspective is that generally the people making this freedom argument are unwilling to share the same set of facts or agree to the scientific conclusions about the pandemic made by the scientists.

This is no valid ethical viewpoint! There is not such a value as absolute freedom. You failed to address the issue totally. Dealing with "risk-related" covid measures is as abject as that. Utilitarism is the consequence. Eg. using children in (not safe) schools. Ayn Rand++
