Given that COVID-19 vaccines are effective: 1. IF hospitals are overwhelmed and; 2. IF being overwhelmed means not admitting some people and; 3. IF the elderly population is the 1st group vaccinated You would EXPECT the age of your average hospitalized person to fall

In other words, having a greater proportion of people hospitalized at a younger age might be a GOOD thing in some contexts because it might indicate that your vaccination program is working

Could it also mean countries are putting all their public health eggs in the vaccine basket, and letting younger people get infected in the meantime?

That depicts the current condition in Michigan. I agree with your analysis. Since there is no political will for another lockdown or even just some additional restrictions, the way out is to vaccinate vaccinate vaccinate.

Yes of course. The problem is if the government of your country sees ICU capacity as the “red line”. Will do only enough to prevent “triage” - levels of infections will be allowed to rise, even young people will be very sick or die, before they get a chance to be vaccinated.

The problem is even larger if this countries ICU capacity is actually quite good.

Exactly, but if your numbers of younger people are replacing your elderly to equivalent healthcare capacity because you’ve lifted NPIs before adequate vaccination it’s still an undesirable public health strategy and outcome.

or it means that the regular voters of the ruling party are 60+, and as soon as they’re vaccinated, it’s economy before health.

Down from ~80% Close to our original projection of 47%, and still going down People above the age of 60 were vaccinated first By now, 50% of the population of Israel received at least 1 dose https://twitter.com/segal_eran/status/1348317646790524933 … pic.twitter.com/XPt7oqH8sA
