One interesting point is that this article gets several facts wrong. Whether that detracts from the commentary on science or not is I suppose up to the readerhttps://twitter.com/VPrasadMDMPH/status/1384328964324302851 …

You will NOT find a better piece on science in the time of covid than this article 👇👇👇 This is exactly how the train came off the rails https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/science/articles/americas-ham-fisted-elite-harming-kids-wrecking-scientific-debate-dennis-patterson-jacob-hale-russell …

This statement, for example, isn't really true. The U.S. has had school closures much less severe than (for example) South Korea, or a dozen other places. The reference only talks about Europe!pic.twitter.com/Tjhr7MTB9H

"Studies have repeatedly concluded" - links to a tweet, and two articles on teacher's unions. There are many studies that have concluded precisely the oppositepic.twitter.com/Ed1aCCzohL

The irony, to me, is that the central argument of the piece is that we should embrace uncertainty, but it presents school reopenings as a perfectly certain and good outcome

(The other irony is two professors of law writing about the horrors of the "smug elite", but that is less about the science)

whenever I read a think piece calling for more humility in the face of uncertainty, I always recall that the scientists or experts expressing the most confident opinions often believe they are the ones interpreting the science correctly

its a bit like calls for civility in discourse-- they always come from the people who think they're loudly expressing their controversial opinions in a perfectly civil manner

My rule of thumb is that anyone with a media profile railing against elites is just cynically using/abusing the powerless for their own self advancement. They are the most ridiculous (yet dangerous) people around.

Vinay is 100% confident that he alone can predict outcomes. He uses bad faith arguments and cites anything supporting him to make what can only be called the most ironic bubble of thought in history (as his desire is to be perceived as an ultra nuanced genius).

The person who tweeted that he likes this article fits the authors’ definition of a smug elite, as do the authors (as you noted). But somehow, smug elite always refers to someone else, usually a person with whom you disagree.

Prasad needs to heal himself. He has circulated smears and ad hominid attacks & blocks critics. Actually in my county & contrary to my original bias, school board surveys show the elites are more in favor of re opening schools than the economically less well off.

To clarify: the surveys were asking people to chose between video only and hybrid video-in person learning; parents in communities receiving government subsidies were more likely to choose video only.
