I feel like I have had some of my best papers in "lower tier" journals when I was a new faculty member and now, papers that are good, but not as good as those before, end up in somewhat “better" journals as my professional network grows. And that seems unfortunate if true.

it's such a game. "big name" authors who don't contribute anything to articles are added to gain access to big name journals. and their CVs grow and they "look" so productive! it's a good ol' boy network, and the sooner they are all retired, the better.
