Moreover, the increased risk from having, say, COPD on COVID-19 death is lower than the risk of being 50 vs 30 years old, so it's actually not true to say that chronic diseases are such a large contributor to COVID deaths

Also, if we stay with the diabetes example, “somewhat” is doing a lot of work there. T1D is an autoimmune condition & is not preventable. T2D may be prevented/delayed in some cases, but even in highly successful trials (eg, DPP), large %s of folks in prevention arm still got T2D.
