Can't fix what people don't believe or want to admit is broken. But I think there's an intervention here to kill the "just say association" dogma (assuming we find what we think we'll find, which we may not).

Be neat even if you could work out a way to automate identifying made-up references. Might stop people (mainly students) from doing it
