I keep thinking about how the pandemic is eventually going to be over, and wondering what's going to happen to the people who've so completely embraced rank pseudoscience to oppose government restrictions during COVID-19

My guess: absolutely nothing. There are very few negative consequences from saying absolute bullshit

Unpopular opinion: as it should be. Given that what is and what is not bullshit is determined by the winners rather than by the truth, I'd hate to see consequences imposed.

I take your point, but I feel like we might be defining consequences differently. I mostly mean people should have to own their mistakes, not getting fired or something

Yeh, I don't want anyone to go to prison, but the occasional interview where people get read their own words and asked about them would be a nice start

Maybe even they stop being invited to interviews because of their false and possibly damaging opinions?

It seems hard to believe there will yet be much structural or institutional change as a result. Unless we’re still getting SARS-CoV-2 boosters every year along with influenza, I suspect by 2030 these times may be an exceedingly distant memory.

Unless there are parallel universes where each scenario is played out, I suspect there will always be room for spin. That's already happened - e.g. the "it's all over"/ "herd immunity" crowd haven't gone anywhere despite the 2nd/3rd waves.

One can have too much relativism and academic freedom. I agree there should be negative consequences for reckless, negligent, low-quality work. Such as: not receiving all the prizes an academic career can offer, receiving less funding, not being hired/promoted.

By what mechanism? When I sit on a committee, I'll argue in favour of the candidates who I feel have done competent, honest, strategic work, but also against the candidates I believe have done low-quality work or worse. It should be that simple.

There must be consequences, however, otherwise there is no justice and that inevitably leads to something much darker. Removal from posts, financial consequences (especially for those who have gained - see here in the UK) and, as a last resort, removing freedom will be necessary.

Academia doesn't get a free pass compared to the rest of the population. If you have contributed to deaths there is no difference between, for example, the negligent factory owner and the academic whose ideas prompted that negligence.
