If you just listen to the accounts from the crematoria and cemeteries, the number of dead is 10x what is being reported by the govt. Given that the govts in India may be interfering with the tests themselves, we can't be sure the detection rates are correct.

I hate that my fears about India's prospects are being proven right. The challenges make ours in the US seem trivial. Density, inequity, language, diverse geography, religion, politics. Undercounts are inevitable, but the bigger the crisis, the harder it is to measure it.

The deaths will likely only just now be starting to appear. There is a lead time of cases wrt deaths, and this new wave has grown very steeply and freely just this month. There will be very many more unless this strain is significantly less deadly despite being more contagious.
