SMH at a thread in which a variety of progressive, left-of-centre people are discussing why tipping in restaurants is a good thing because it "encourages good service", as if food service is that one weird bit of the economy where empathy for low-paid workers doesn't apply. /1

Tipping is demeaning and an excuse for underpaying and unliveable wages. "Good service" should be a given in any establishment. Tipping should be optional for excellent service by adequately paid staff and never an obligation to subsidise poor wages.

Agreed. As an American, when I travel to places where servers are paid a decent wage & don't depend on tips I'm relieved to eat my meal in peace without them always checking on me.
