Pretty huge new systematic review published yesterday on suicide and the pandemic: - no increase in deaths by suicide in any location identified - evidence mostly in high income areas https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(21)00091-2/fulltext#seccestitle150 …pic.twitter.com/z2mpDG7joc

I've written about this before, and might do an update - the best evidence shows that there has been no large increase in suicide deaths due to "lockdowns" thus farhttps://gidmk.medium.com/have-lockdowns-caused-suicides-during-covid-19-dd6b7a741f39 …

And for those wondering - yes, there were real predictions that in high-income countries (and elsewhere) the death toll due to suicides would be enormous in 2020 These predictions appear to have been incorrecthttps://twitter.com/Adam_Creighton/status/1258322221283459073?s=20 …

As ever, this is not a statement about general mental health, nor even about global suicide rates. It's entirely possible that mental health has suffered tremendously due to government action, this just does not appear to have resulted in large numbers of suicides

It is also worth noting that this is still short-term - obviously, long-term consequences have yet to arrive

Victoria (Aus) had the longest and hardest lockdown for the second wave while NSW and Qld were open at that time, so they are directly comparable. This is pretty much as good a natural experiment to test predictions. The latest Vic coroner’s report still shows no uptick.

Is it not just confirmation bias to reference this study? They looked at statistics up until the end of July only. Not exactly a good reflection on if it's an issue.

Also worth noting some of the modelling research that has been discussed was not ‘predictive’ modelling, but rather forecasting possible ‘what if?’ scenarios to assist decision makers in understanding the complex effects of pandemic policy on mental health outcomes @CSART_world

The farther removed from the original event the more difficult to confidently assert that 'longer term consequences' actually derive from the original event would be this layman's 'take' on that.

Absolutely. Needs monitoring. Early part of effects is all that can currently be concluded. I’m more concerned about the longer term effects of healthcare workers mental health. Some colleagues have noticed an increase in such suicides, maybe statistical clusters.

What about low income areas? They've taken the worst of it all.
