Pretty huge new systematic review published yesterday on suicide and the pandemic: - no increase in deaths by suicide in any location identified - evidence mostly in high income areas https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(21)00091-2/fulltext#seccestitle150 …pic.twitter.com/z2mpDG7joc

I've written about this before, and might do an update - the best evidence shows that there has been no large increase in suicide deaths due to "lockdowns" thus farhttps://gidmk.medium.com/have-lockdowns-caused-suicides-during-covid-19-dd6b7a741f39 …

      Health Nerd Retweeted Adam Creighton

And for those wondering - yes, there were real predictions that in high-income countries (and elsewhere) the death toll due to suicides would be enormous in 2020 These predictions appear to have been incorrecthttps://twitter.com/Adam_Creighton/status/1258322221283459073?s=20 …

As ever, this is not a statement about general mental health, nor even about global suicide rates. It's entirely possible that mental health has suffered tremendously due to government action, this just does not appear to have resulted in large numbers of suicides

It is also worth noting that this is still short-term - obviously, long-term consequences have yet to arrive

Yep. Ivor Cummins was one. Thankfully it didn't, irony is these are the same people who complain that scientific advisory boards are fearmongering when trying to keep you safe...https://twitter.com/WrongAgainIvor/status/1374343375487401986 …

#WrongAgainIvor Major rise in suicide rates was one of Ivor's biggest claims, he had no data then, and thankfully he has no data now. Just fear-pushing propaganda. https://archive.is/wip/WNASU  https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/03/10  https://twitter.com/andrewflood/status/1317817655693352960?s=19 … pic.twitter.com/JiKID1H0QU

Which, as ever, leads to why. Why did some think it might and why has it been at least neutral if not protective. I look forward to new ideas for societal approaches to reducing death by suicide.
