I've written about this before, and might do an update - the best evidence shows that there has been no large increase in suicide deaths due to "lockdowns" thus farhttps://gidmk.medium.com/have-lockdowns-caused-suicides-during-covid-19-dd6b7a741f39 …

And for those wondering - yes, there were real predictions that in high-income countries (and elsewhere) the death toll due to suicides would be enormous in 2020 These predictions appear to have been incorrecthttps://twitter.com/Adam_Creighton/status/1258322221283459073?s=20 …

As ever, this is not a statement about general mental health, nor even about global suicide rates. It's entirely possible that mental health has suffered tremendously due to government action, this just does not appear to have resulted in large numbers of suicides

It is also worth noting that this is still short-term - obviously, long-term consequences have yet to arrive

I think it’s about high income countries, not rich neighborhoods within them. Nothing wrong with studying these countries (admittedly should do all but data hard to come by in poor ones). Many are claiming suicides are up in rich countries so important data for policy there

Another issue I see with this study, is that they're collecting data from the first few months of the lockdown. Who's actually expecting people to break down mentally after a month or two of locking down?

A bunch of people who were merely inconvenienced complaining about "lockdown" 1 week into it

“Japan is one of the few major economies to disclose timely suicide data -- the most recent national data for the US, for example, is from 2018” https://edition.cnn.com/2020/11/28/asia/japan-suicide-women-covid-dst-intl-hnk/index.html … It seems that data sources are not very reliable at this point in time Plenty of

Turns out the just-released scientific study is both more up to date and has more data than the 6 month old news article
