Carl T. Bergstrom Retweeted Wiley in Research

This seems weaselly to me. If lengthy material can simply disappear between posting and being designated VOR, it's not properly citable—so why is it posted at all? @wileyinresearch needs to 1) acknowledge changes to and 2) preserve an archival copy of it gives a DOI. Period.https://twitter.com/wileyinresearch/status/1381614597896032257 …

Hi, thanks for tagging us. To clarify, changes were made before the paper became version of record. It was first posted at Accepted Article stage. It then gets proofed, corrected (incl. those changes you’ve noted) then the version of record is published: https://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/Journal-Authors/Publication/index.html …

tl;dr background for people interested in #ScholarlyCommunicaton: The former editor of @EJCI_News published an appendix with a lengthy attack on credentials of a critic. After an outcry, the appendix was removed "in proof" without formal notice or a preserved version.

It's not just that - the text of the document was changed as well. The original paper used the phrase "cherry-picking" several times - in the "typeset" version, this insulting language is removed and the discussion is actually different as well

Yeah except that's NOT the notice that @wileyinresearch put. You said it was fully peer reviewed and that differences may arise from "copyediting, typesetting, pagination and proofreading". Changing the actual content is not ok. See pic. (Yes I screenshotted html version too)pic.twitter.com/gBt6UCcGRG

Yep. @wileyinresearch should explain how papers can be accepted and published, then enormously revised without any revision history or reference to said revisions. This is clearly not "typesetting"

Again, if their were different DOIs I could sort of accept it, less than ideal but still possibly defensible. But when they ask for citation by DOI, then literally overwrite the DOI with new content that says something different, that's alteration of the scientific record.

Authorea has version control on their DOIs for exactly this reason. I mean, the changes themselves seem prudent. But an Authorea DOI would have /v2 or some such appended.
