Interesting the publisher has substantially changed the article during "typesetting" without acknowledgement, including dropping the entire rambling attack on @GidMK and ICCRT and renumbering the appendices. Good thing I saved a PDFhttps://twitter.com/CT_Bergstrom/status/1376080062131269634 …

In his latest paper about COVID infection fatality rates, John Ioannidis does not address the critiques from @GidMK, but instead engages in the most egregious gatekeeping that I have ever seen in a scientific paper. pic.twitter.com/P08sFIovD6

Huh! Good thing we ~all~ saved PDFs Astonishing that the publisher has not made a public statement @wileyinresearch

Ioannidis has added a note about the removed appendix. Therein he complains that the outcry over his attack was yet another way of silencing scientific debate.pic.twitter.com/ZWW21tXLpi

That is absolute rubbish. If I call out abusive behavior in a scientific paper, I'm not silencing scientific debate. If anything, writing appendices that deprecate the qualifications of others is closer to silencing debate than is standing up for norms of scientific decency.

(I do also agree that the publisher @wileyinresearch has something to answer for here. If an entire section of a *published* paper can disappear without notice, the @EJCI_News carries very little value as a venue of record.)

I agree! There's not even a note as far as I can see that the paper has been quite substantially revised

This is amazing! As in, amazingly bad! This pandemic has created so many useful examples of how academic work & scientific thinking should *not* be done. This ongoing episode should be in future textbooks.

Wait, you mean once something gets through peer review and accepted, we get another chance to substantially modify the paper? I've got some outrageous claims I'd like to get published...

Not just accepted. Published. I don't want to dispute the appropriate scope of changes made in proof. But this paper was published on the publisher's site.

This is absurd! Quietly changing a published paper without acknowledging it @GidMK have you submitted a letter to the editor on this? I know the entire scientific community has your back here! lol

Not yet, but tbh if this sort of opacity is the norm at @wileyinresearch I can't see the point. They haven't even responded to our emails!
