It is truly bizarre that people who have been arguing for "herd immunity" for the last 12 months don't understand it at all This is literally what you'd expect due to herd effectspic.twitter.com/k02uvWYReS

A great example is HPV vaccination. After enough women were vaccinated, HPV rates declined even in unvaccinated men at a pretty impressive ratehttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6737522/ …

It's also worth remembering that Israel has had a massive lockdown in this period, which is almost certainly also driving some of the reduction across age groups

The point is that herd immunity is BY DEFINITION about protection of people *who are not immune* If unvaccinated/uninfected people stop getting sick...that's literally herd immunity at work

(Sorry, should've said it *may* be herd immunity, obviously there are other reasons like interventions that could reduce rates of infection across all age groups)

'Herd immunity' is, as you would well know, relative; and acquiring it for COVID19 will be a moving target only able to be qualified and quantified by epidemiologists

Ironically, you correctly state that herd immunity is relative, then incorrectly refer to the absolute ideal of it being a state that is "acquired" rather than one that is moved towards with increasingly apparent benefits

I would also prefer a term something like "group immunity" ( since "community immunity" would just sound strange!) - "Herd immunity" sounds like we're just cattle in the capitalist machine ... oh, OK, as you were.

Supporting evidence- here you can see that lockdown worked for all ages until B117 hit. Then we had a surge for unvaccinated ages, and only then herd immunity.https://twitter.com/yuvharpaz/status/1379502421077004291?s=20 …

המבוגרים ירדו בגלל החיסון עוד קודם. pic.twitter.com/te8Jop0572

Prefer the term herd protection for that reason, since you are not immune just because others are, regardless of how many or what proportion they constitute.
