I also don't think these guidelines (at least from my reading) say anything about emergency relief for flare-ups, just for long-term management of chronic pain
The headline isn't very good tho, I'd recommend reading the actual article which goes into the nuance of why painkillers are being dropped as a first-line option
Surprised to see acupuncture being recommended, can’t see a huge amount of evidence for it when I search.
Anecdotally I can say it provided some relief to my spondylitis to begin with but the benefits lessened as the condition worsened. I was and remain sceptical of its benefits but something did provide pain relief at the start of the treatment.
There is sufficent evidence on exercise from RCTs showing the benefits on chronic pain management. There are other lifestyle regimens such as diet and sleep that can alleviate pain. But they are difficult to be assessed in RCTs. I agree on reduced pain meds on a long-term basis.
I wonder if the information in this petition is accurate?https://www.change.org/p/national-institute-for-health-and-care-excellence-stop-the-proposed-cruel-changes-to-chronic-pain-nice-guidelines …
