This should not be the default position. There is likely only a modest marginal benefit for rich countries from vaccinating young people, while developing nations would benefit enormously from these doseshttps://twitter.com/davidalim/status/1369753569277190147 …

Would it also drive faster production of vaccines, or even incentivise loosening of IP in order to speed up overall rate of vaccinations?
-
One issue with letting the IP loose temporarily is that if someone runs with it and cuts corners and there's a safety issue this is a blow to BioNTech/Moderna/etc.

It's also a missed diplomacy opportunity. About one week of US doses would vaccinate everyone 80+ in every country south of the USA and other countries are exporting vaccines to fill the vacuum.
-
Another thing is that some of the phase 3 trials took places in countries that then never got the vaccine... e.g. Pfizer in Argentina that then refused to accept any liability in a deal to sell doses - https://www.statnews.com/2021/02/23/pfizer-plays-hardball-in-covid19-vaccine-negotiations-in-latin-america/ … - so now they turned to the sputnik vaccine.

I am eligible for vaccination but cannot bring myself to accept it for reasons of conscience such as this issue you raise. I have managed solitude for a year, and can continue on indefinitely if need be so that my dose can go elsewhere.
-
That's your choice but in all honesty I don't think individuals refusing vaccines is going to do much if anything to improve this situation. The doses aren't going to go to other countries right now, and with the limited shelf life it's probably better to just get yours imo

But that’s not the role of the US government
