The consequence of the nihilistic denialist nonsense - even basic, simple COVID-19 policies were ignored in many places until it was far too latehttps://twitter.com/nntaleb/status/1368155142730768392 …

When I flew back to the U.S. last week I had to show a Covid-negative PCR test. Why did it take ONE YEAR to enfore such a simple & maximally effective rule? Borders are controlled by the Fed Gov. How many of the 500K deaths would have been avoided? How many lockdowns?

What is so frightening. Is that it appears those that supported the leaders who showed such ignorance and carries disregard for life, have learned nothing. It feels like what should have been a moment of awakening has been anything but

Australia has had 6667 overseas acquired infections (according to http://covidlive.com.au ) so how many imports have USA had? Something over 100x this given they have had much less restrictions? So maybe a million imports, the majority of which have been free to infect others

An underrated reason why Melbourne was able to squash their outbreak to zero was they had no imported cases at all during their whole second wave. Much easier to put out a fire if people aren't starting any new ones

Because there wasn't the test capacity a year ago to accommodate the needs of recreational travellers.

I always think of Peter Hitchens opposing physical distancing & crowd limits on March 14/20 because it was bad for movie theatres and businesses that cater to weddings.

The earliest paper I read on Covid was from Taleb, Bar-Yam & Norman. It was from Jan 26 last year, and still stacks up pretty well..https://necsi.edu/systemic-risk-of-pandemic-via-novel-pathogens-coronavirus-a-note …

The reason was because the unworkable herd immunity policy was being enacted.
