Conversely, I've had some really excellent discussions on Twitter about research, people are often happy to engage. Is this unprofessional?

Another important point to think about
@apsmunro is that formal channels to critique research take at least months, and can easily stretch to years. The challenge with the status quo is that it often results in no action even for obvious mistakesShow this thread -
If you don't believe me, check out
@MicrobiomDigest and her feed. Hundreds/thousands of papers with everything from mistakes to fraud, but rarely is any action takenShow this thread

If the "professional" channels weren't so painfully slow during a rapidly changing pandemic that would help their cause too - I've had critical responses held for 6 mths by prominent journals!

My experience is that "standard letter to the editor" channel to express concerns about a paper is fine for an opinion difference or countering with evidence from literature. This gets conflated with actual ERRORS in math/images/analysis, that simply require a damn retraction.
-
Sure, contacting the authors or editors is fine to try and engage that RETRACTION channel, but if they refuse to acknowledge a true error, it would be a unethical to not raise the issues to a wider audience that those errors impact.
