But it's 'news' and the government on behalf of Murdoch and 9 don't want 'news' shared on social media without social media paying. The govt blackmail act was always going to be a two-edged sword.
What aunty Jane had for dinner last night fits into the broad definition of news on Facebook. Once again the govt with the support of the ALP has completely screwed up legislation introduced on behalf of Murdoch, 9 etc.
If Facebook and social media are so bad according to the government and opposition that new legislation has to be passed, why would they use Facebook to promote "official government" information?

If FB is the source of "official government health pages that distribute COVID-19 information" then perhaps the government should be supporting Facebook not hitting it with ill-thought out and sledgehammer legislation supported by the opposition?
Actually I think its arguable that these pages do come under the broad definition of news given in the poorly constructed legislation.
That is simply not true. Firstly, most of these organizations would fail the revenue test. They would also fail the content test, under which an organization must *primarily* create core news content to qualify
