the CDC school guidance convo is a lot. Those who overstated "the science” for months are frustrated that the new guidelines don't really endorse what they thought was basically fact. And it seems to be dawning on others that there's good-faith debate among experts re: standards?

I've found the schools discourse so exhausting, especially how people who want to reopen schools often misrepresent the evidence as settled rather than embrace the uncertainty

Or at least be honest about the uncertainty & limitations.

Exactly! You can advocate for reopening schools on the basis that it is the least harmful option without pretending that the evidence demonstrates conclusively no/minimal harm from reopening

we also see the tensions playing out with the vaccine conversation. If it’s true teachers are not at risk, why prioritize them? If they are at higher risk, why cast their demands for vaccination first as “anti-science”? No one wants to say, yes we’re asking you to bear some risk

Pretty much. Problem is once you've taken a fixed position like "schools are safe" it's hard to backtrack to a reasonable statement like "we're not entirely sure that schools are safe but we think on balance it's worth the risk"

Yep. So then what else to do than throw out integrity and start making straw man arguments while you shoot the vulnerable messengers?

The “let me speak to your manager” tone has been whats really gotten me

Yeh that was the response we got when we pointed out that a schools paper was mathematically impossible. Because it's more important that we open schools than that we do maths correctly in scientific papers

But the science is clear!
