Ignoring the structural social forces that drive obesity isn't an edgy opinion, it's just ignoranthttps://twitter.com/matthewsyed/status/1360913923340394499 …

I believe you’ve spoken about how you’ve successfully maintained a significant weight loss? Does that inform your view that there’s no place to discuss individual measures even if we must also discuss food environment?
-
Yep I've lost and maintained 25kg altogether. I think the place for individual influences on behaviour is in discussion with individuals - if we're talking about societal issues then the focus obviously has to be societal

Much like climate change. Also absolves corporations of any responsibility.

Yes, less food + more exercise can work to lose weight. But there has to be more to it when there’s slim people eating junk food, carbs, alcohol with zero exercise! It’s obviously not just eating healthy & exercise that makes/keeps a person slim.

It’s utterly absurd and prevents us from addressing the real issues causing our obesity epidemic.

The idea of personal autonomy is being replaced by structural forces. Where once gluttony would have been considered the cause of obesity, now the individual is thought to be at the mercy of structural forces. However, changes to diet can increase personal autonomy.

Ignorants are always those who think differently? Individuals are not mere victims of society. Actually the more you blame society, the more you tend to believe the individual is psychologically weak by nature.

I only partially agree. I took responsibility for my obesity and lost 64lbs in 9 months by going LCHF. It would have been faster but I allowed myself treats. 25gms of 70% cocoa solid chocolate every day & wine at weekends. If I can do it, others can too.

Obviously, individual responsibility is required, but for some people there is something wrong that no diet will fix. I think many others, if they ate the right foods would loose weight. Too many drink sugary drinks. Too much highly processed foods, and no veg.
-
Others have a food addiction. They eat even when not hungry. That's something that requires therapy, not ever new diet plans. Most people don't really know what foods to eat either. Nor do the experts seem to agree on much yet. Some say no fat, some say eat fat. Who is right?
