For real though: I think journalists, even careful ones, also often think this way. If you stick a "may" in there, or a question mark in the headline, you've done your duty.

I use 'I might be wrong' often, but protecting my reputation is far from the main reason why. It is used to express my (relative lack of) confidence in my statements as well as to give the other party room for respectful disagreement.

Stating uncertainty is intellectually honest and useful to other good actors. I don't need any reputational reasons.

I'd guess asymmetric response: hedging reduces confidence in your claims if correct, and also does not protect you if later found to be wrong
