To begin they define a competency: “A competency is defined as the combination of knowledge, skill, and ability that professionals must have in order to perform specific functions within organizations or professional practices.”

They then did a survey to determine what people felt was the expected competency level of a postdoc in epidemiology in an academic setting with 2 years of experience after graduating from a PhD program.

#2 was "Competency to plan and conduct a review of the existing peer-reviewed literature and of other sources in order to describe the current evidence for a specific scientific question.” Again, another one I agree with.

Other than 3, these surprised me. I’d have thought that these would be things a postdoc 2 years after PhD graduation would be expected to be more competent in, though admittedly the scores were still reasonably high.

I think 3 is very important! Whether or not it's a core competency is perhaps debatable, but I think people should be at least familiar with the value of and methods involved in qual research at a minimum
