The challenge here is that much of this data is mixed, uncertain, and hard to interpret. Having many studies with the same methodology saying the same thing doesn't necessarily provide any more evidence if they all have the same biases

Agree. One of the things that makes it difficult to be confident in these studies is that all of the biases would lead to an underestimate of cases transmitted in schools. Routine asymptomatic testing & genetic sequencing could help clear a lot of this up.

Yes, exactly! If kids are less likely to experience symptoms (almost certainly true), and we only test those with symptoms (often the case), then it's pretty much inevitable that we'd underestimate the true number of infections in the age group

Indeed. Additionally, it would be helpful to know what contact tracing means in each study because it sounds like each district does it differently. I would like to know what criteria they use & how they are able to confidently identify transmission sources in high spread areas.

Exactly this! This study from the NFL came out today and the difference in the resources and seriousness of the infection control measures compared to our public schools is very telling. Why this hadn’t gotten this level of resources is the story.https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7004e2.htm …

I think that the cost would have been enormous. It's also possible that supplies are insufficient.

Without a doubt. But maybe we could do it in one school district so we’d have the information to make the best decisions in a horrible situation? If opening schools is so important, where’s the investment in doing it safely?

That's a really good point that I have not seen raised. Why aren't there RCTs looking at school openings? Why are we relying on a website that mostly just collates similarly biased observational data rather than a group of well-run studies that actually answer the question?

It's certainly not because it's impossible to do. I can think of several designs that would reasonably compare safety of school reopnening in a variety of situations. And yet, the debate usually just comes back to who is right about the slim evidence that we DO have

Actually getting schools to implement these measures appears to be easier said than done. The situations in schools described in the linked article also point to studied schools NOT being representative. One of *many* examples. 👇🏻 https://twitter.com/BrainScan2017/status/1354833156701085703 …pic.twitter.com/qZ3R8I6SQN
