One curious thing keeps bugging me though, why are all those countries so close to each other? Do we have an example success story from Europe or America or West Asia or Central Asia, not just South-East Asia and Oceania?

I see where you're going with that, but Mongolia and New Zealand are as far apart as Canada and the southern-most tip of Argentina. Or Iceland and the bottom of Africa.
