Exactly. The media coverage of this... and the academic coverage of it, is appalling. Again. #auspol #googleaustralia #Googlehttps://twitter.com/Leighlo/status/1353442823454904320 …

Referencing the French agreement is interesting, but correct me if I'm wrong: that pays using the news showcase, not: A. Inferring links should be paid, and B. Requires algorithm explanations to news organisations ahead of time. That's not remotely the same.

Wait - am I reading that right? The media companies want Google to specifically explain the algorithm...........only to them, instead of making it public?

no... my reading of the draft bill is that tech co. aren't required to share the details of the algorithm, but they are required notice of upcoming changes that might significantly affect news media in various ways

And that's to every single webpage on Google (assuming they have up to date contact details that direct to the relevant person in each instance) or just a chosen few? #auspol #googleaustralia

not sure what you're asking, sorry? the code will cover news media organisations on the list. I'm not arguing in favour of it, I've just seen a few people say some things that don't seem to be in the actual bill as far as I can tell

Ah gotcha. My bad. I was reading it as part of another thread! At the same time, my point kinda stands, the constant changes to the algorithm would mean constant warnings. Also, there aren't really any changes that would massively affect news anymore. Clause cld be abused tho.

      Replying to @NickRossTech @NickEvershed and

The specific wording appears to imply that it is only changes explicitly targeting news organizations that they would have to update on, any routine/minor/not focused on news updates wouldn't apply

          Replying to @GidMK @NickRossTech and

Also the act sets up a specific requirement for notifications, with every organization having to set up a dedicated contact who will notify/be notified when these changes occur. Fulfilling the requirement would probably just be a mass email to the govt held list
