Isn't "contrarianism" what science is all about? Or am I wrong? Did the progress actually get made by scientists huddling around the consensus, going on vacation and posting pics on Twitter?

I did not say "science is the provenance of disaffected genius." Science is about *testing*, about doubting, about challenging consensus, for it is only through this process can one have confidence that the consensus is true. Mocking those that challenge is surely not science.

Challenging consensus happens with data though. Not with pipe dreams or hypotheses or hot takes. And it usually happens between peers- not just posting on SM and getting a bunch of random likes.
