A common statement I've heard is that washing your hair too often messes with the natural oils and makes it somehow more greasy. Not as much of an issue for me now, obviously, but when I had a ponytail... This sounds very unlikely to me. Thoughts, twitter?

It's dead. It's mainly keratin.

The idea seems to be that the more you wash your hair, the more oil your scalp makes and so you have to keep washing it more often.

It does sound unlikely that you had a natural ponytail, indeed

No, the word natural is no red flag. Your skin is covered with lipid-water-film. This is natural, how else would you call it? Soap destroys it. It gets rebuilt, but if you destroy it more often than it can rebuild, your skin suffers. I have no idea about the hair thing, though.
