Every once in a while I'm reminded of my reaction when a journalist told me that Britain was reportedly pursuing a "herd immunity" strategy for COVID-19 I laughed in disbelief, and asked if they were serious Because it was, and still is, a bit absurd

I wasn’t clear whether you’re saying that the concept of herd immunity itself is absurd, or that it doesn’t apply to SARS-CoV-2, or that pursuing a herd immunity strategy is absurd. PS thank you for taking the time to answer

Broadly the third if your means of achieving it is natural acquisition of the disease and thus immunity. The harms of such a strategy are immense and its not normally achieved - its more commonly the case that you have an ongoing bubbling reservoir of disease.
