Also, considering that the entire point of medicine is to "backload" the "pain" it's contrary to one of the best things civilization has ever accomplished - living long healthy lives well past our non-medical-access expiration dates.

Agreed. The collective readiness to take advice like this from lay pundits & politicians as opposed to the actual experts, is perhaps the biggest problem we've had in the US. Just because someone makes it fun & exciting & extremely simplified, doesn't make it actually true...

If even the preeminent researchers & epidemiologists would never make such an absolute claim, then why should we believe political "leaders", TV pundits, armchair Twitter experts etc when they try to convince us that the issues are so clear cut. Laziness of thought is infectious
