In a sense, those blathering on about "academic silencing" have a point- it's true that even though there are innumerable papers bad enough to be retracted, it takes enormous amounts of negative press before a journal will consider it because bottom line they do not care

Yep. My student found a paper once with calculation errors that completely changed the results. Original authors eventually agreed. Journal editor didn’t care.
