When I did my PhD I got a copy and read every single reference I included. I think I was unusual in this regard. Many seemed happy to include a "standard reference" based on their supervisor or someone else eminent referencing it in their paper.

Did you ever think, for one single moment, that you would spend the entire year reading widespread BS on PCR, R values, specificity/sensitivity, FPR's, Koch's postulates, herd immunity etc. like it's commonplace discourse in society?!

Take that as a lesson for anyone that says 'we have the receipts' & point to a bunch of articles /studies that don't even come close to saying what's asserted (oft when authors make that summation in Results section themselves-with data often belying what the author's surmise).

Its not basic fact-checking. A tool-kit is required to read/contextualize this stuff. Don't belittle the work. You inadverdantly encourage the armchair empidemiologist with 40K followers. This stuff is not beyond common folks reach. But takes patience and work and to get right.
