Maybe it's an Australian thing but if I were at a dinner party and anyone introduced themselves as "Dr. Smith" I'd immediately assume that they were dreadfully dreary and pompous because you're at the dinner table not a lecture theatre

"Excuse me Jeremy, could you pass the salt" "I prefer Dr. Smith. I am a cardiologist, after all" 😬

It’s not just an Australian thing that’s pompous in the US too

No one actually does this, and I work in an Academic department full of PhD's. It's such a strawman.

I use the "Dr." when I'm introducing myself in an exam room and absolutely nowhere else. I used to use first name/last name, but that left people confused about whether I was the doctor or just some other preliminary person.

Dreadfully dreary and pompous, or brutally dismissive of someone's attempts to engage with them.

Agreed. I’m even appalled when introductions occur at a work meeting and someone introduces themselves as Dr Smith. But perhaps that’s just the insecurity I feel as a non-medico epidemiologist with a PhD!

Maybe it's a worldwide thing, with the exception of Austria and some really evil Germans. ;-) https://www.img.uni-bayreuth.de/de/team/nagel-eckhard/ …pic.twitter.com/074FnDTI5l
