Excellent thread. To a great extent, the current nightmare in the US and UK can be directly attributed to these fringe denialistshttps://twitter.com/GYamey/status/1338074483073183744 …

But it exaggerates and tells untruths, no? Normally you’re picking out those things. UK locked down instead of letting it rip. And GBD doesn’t mention letting it rip anywhere either. People will be dismissing this thread on that basis.

The GBD is a fairly explicit "let it rip" strategy, although the authors have tried to walk back that sentiment somewhat now that it's proven so disastrous everywhere

Allowing HI to progress isn’t exactly let it rip though is it? It’s building up even during lockdown, albeit slowly. And... in your opinion, if I may ask, is preventing every infection the only valid goal?

Whatever the terms the GBD authors may have misleadingly used, the document itself calls for reopening of every service in its entirety, which by definition is a let it rip approach. They don't use the term, because it has negative connotations, but that's what they call for

@GidMK I know I’m throwing pebbles at a mountain, but... GBD does advocate that those who are at minimal risk should live normally with some measures in place (but not others). Do you really think ideal response should not terate any infections, even low risk?1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

The reason I didn't respond to the question the first time is that it is a ridiculous straw man

You make a fair point. Apologies. And I’m not even arguing for full endorsement of the GBD, but more risk-proportionate approach. Like with vaccines in UK, the most focus is on the most at risk. And I think you’d agree this is right and comparable with parts of the GBD, aye?

And I hope you see what I’m trying to do here: build a bridge. Labelling GBD as “let it rip” is equally a straw man. There are some good ideas there (protecting the vulnerable, some protection measures...), that’s why it will continue to appeal to many. Can we bridge the divide?

The problem is that the GBD is deliberately disingenuous. The authors say it's not a let it rip strategy, but the actual things that they advocate leave no room for any other approach
