Excellent thread. To a great extent, the current nightmare in the US and UK can be directly attributed to these fringe denialistshttps://twitter.com/GYamey/status/1338074483073183744 …
The GBD is a fairly explicit "let it rip" strategy, although the authors have tried to walk back that sentiment somewhat now that it's proven so disastrous everywhere

I think the problem is that Johnson has always tried to appease science and Sunak, but done it poorly. Yes, UK locked down, eventually, in March, but I can believe GBD approach appealed as a way to delay SAGE circuit break in September. Too little, too late again as consequence

But yous is a much more factual (and correct) statement, than in the referenced thread from Prof. Yamey. Not mentioning that Boris did lock down and alluding to “let it rip” instead is an easily dismissable straw man.

Allowing HI to progress isn’t exactly let it rip though is it? It’s building up even during lockdown, albeit slowly. And... in your opinion, if I may ask, is preventing every infection the only valid goal?

Whatever the terms the GBD authors may have misleadingly used, the document itself calls for reopening of every service in its entirety, which by definition is a let it rip approach. They don't use the term, because it has negative connotations, but that's what they call for
