Since this has been a major talking point throughout the pandemic, I thought I'd collate the now quite large evidence-base showing that suicide rates have mostly remained steady during lockdowns/COVID times

Also important to point out that this certainly does not exclude the pandemic generally causing more suicides. It just shows that none of the evidence to date supports the fears of a huge increase in suicide associated with lockdown that continue to be constantly given air

9. Another datapoint to add - Saskatchewan, Canada. Only data up to the end of October, but still about 10% fewer suicides than you'd expect in 2020 overallpic.twitter.com/z84Lc9g12c

Can you more fully define "a suicide that didn't happen?"
-
There may have been suicides that were prevented by lockdowns. It is hard to interpret rates that don't change at an individual level - all we know is that the overall numbers haven't changed, not how that impacted individuals

Thanks for very interesting info. In a simplistic model of suicidal behaviour, could lockdown affect on opportunity & capability as well motivation? Capability: is access to means affected? Opportunity: reduced? (rarely alone) Motivation: more emotional & mental health problems
-
Yes, I think that may be in large part the reason why most measurable mental health indicators got worse but suicide didn't increase
