As an Australian, reading this thread is both a terrifying and somewhat confusing experience If this had happened in Australia, the bill would be $0https://twitter.com/DGlaucomflecken/status/1333838892609335297 …

Can someone explain to me why the riches country in the world restricts healthcare to only those who can afford it? There are many adjectives I could use to describe this! None of them good!

Emergency healthcare isn’t restricted. It just might come with a Bill later on that if you dont pay will ruin your credit. The care is not restricted.

I have, yes absolutely. But this isn’t about me. I’m not saying the US healthcare economics are good. I’m clarifying that healthcare is not restricted to the wealthy. Anyone can walk into an ER and get some healthcare.

And how about drug costs and management of non emergencies? How are these costs met without adequate insurance?

Are you genuinely interested or are you trying to get me to agree with you?

No, actually genuinely interested! All healthcare systems have their issues, but I struggle with the idea of a healthcare system that is not universal. Everything has its limits but I feel health should not be profit based.

So in the US there are piecemeal options for people who don’t have insurance, have inadequate insurance, or can’t pay out of pocket: - Medicare for ppl over 65 & ppl in renal failure - Medicaid for qualifying children, families, & ppl w certain disabilities - Veteran services ...

Can I ask why drug prices are so inflated in the US? This appears to be a huge problem for those requiring long term treatments ie. diabetes.

Suuuuuper complex. It's a mixed bag of poor regulation, conditions which prohibit market responses, and terribly structured incentives
