Draft: Comment on COVID IFR papers cited widely: "Here, we show that many of the studies on which these estimates are based are scientifically flawed.. Moreover, a widely cited meta-analysis misrepresents some of the IFR values in the original studies..” Feedback welcomepic.twitter.com/wYSRScuVgE

You're criticizing the meta-analysis below published in IJID. That meta-analysis largely superseded by another soon-to-be published study from the lead author, @GidMK. https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1331762518474199042 … https://ijidonline.com/article/S1201-9712(20)32180-9/fulltext …pic.twitter.com/Dt4bak4CCY

U criticize 5 studies included in the meta-analysis. But the authors were aware of higher risk of bias in those studies, + so stratified by risk of bias. 4 of the 5 studies u cited (in sections I to IV) were non-serological, and so rated high risk. https://www.ijidonline.com/article/S1201-9712(20)32180-9/fulltext …pic.twitter.com/sXu8KZqPVH

The fifth study you cited (in section V; Bendavid et al.) was also rated as having high risk of bias. So all 5 of the studies you critiqued were already recognized as having a high risk of bias by the authors *months* ago. https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1285020775892709377 … https://www.ijidonline.com/article/S1201-9712(20)32180-9/fulltext …pic.twitter.com/myza9nbFMn

The meta-analysis' authors, @GidMK + @LeaMerone, also calculated IFR just using the studies with a low risk of bias. And they noted that IFR was likely an underestimate. So your comment below doesn't undermine the paper. https://twitter.com/yaneerbaryam/status/1333601991461842946 … https://www.ijidonline.com/article/S1201-9712(20)32180-9/fulltext …pic.twitter.com/Iklhw2XNMy

You also also start the paper off with some points about a 2.0% IFR from the Diamond Princess vs. a 0.6% IFR. I already posted a separate thread explaining why your line of reasoning there doesn't work. https://twitter.com/AtomsksSanakan/status/1291563539614904321 …https://twitter.com/AtomsksSanakan/status/1291573636948807680 …

Including the Diamond Princess by itself is also not required, since no one lives there permanently. Hence its data being combined with data from China, France, etc. to get IFR estimates for places where people permanently live. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.03.20089854v4.full.pdf … pic.twitter.com/BrIFdSHHjK

To be honest, I broadly agree with the criticism, although not all of the specific points. The meta-analysis was the best estimate we could calculate in June - it certainly isn't the best estimate now

Much of this - if not all - was noted in our supplementary appendix. Indeed, the first thing we said was precisely what the conclusion of this appears to be, that the IFR is not fixed, and that this figure should not be taken as a perfect estimate
